Unboxing and Initial Impressions: First Look at the $120 Amazon Find
Packaging and Contents: What’s Included?
The Vevor Diesel Heater arrives well-packaged for delivery, with minimal signs of shipping damage. Priced around $120 on Amazon, it includes essential components and user instructions. Upon unboxing, you’ll find:
- The heater unit
- Ducting
- Exhaust/Intake components
- User manual
Initial Quality Concerns: Fuel Line Kink and Potential Issues
Quality control is crucial in any product. Upon inspection, a significant kink in the fuel line was present. This could lead to potential performance issues. However, after cutting the kinked section off and reattaching, the remaining line seemed sufficient.
Installation and Setup: A DIY Approach
Mounting the Heater: Utilizing Scrap Wood
This heater’s exhaust is routed straight down out of the center of the unit. This either requires a different 90deg angle, or for the unit to be elevated. For mine, I decided to create my own mount for mine in the garage out of some scrap wood. Using scrap wood simplifies installation and offers a customized fit for your specific space requirements. The DIY approach ensures that you’re making necessary adjustments on the fly. The most important thing step is to make sure that the exhaust is routed safely and away from anything that can combust.
Exhaust Installation: Routing Through the Wall
The exhaust installation was smooth, as it required running a through-wall pipe for my application, but the unit can run with just what is provided in the box as long as you route the exhaust out of the space you’re heating. This approach is essential for safe venting and prevents exhaust fumes from entering your living space.
The exhaust is simply attached by sliding the pipe over the outlet, and affixing it with hose clamps.
Air Intake Setup: A Simple Solution
Setting up the air intake is just as easy. Attaching the small corrugated pipe keeps airflow moving efficiently into the unit. Ensuring proper airflow is vital for the heater’s overall performance.
Functionality and Performance: Testing the Vevor Diesel Heater
Initial Startup and Priming: Manual vs. Automatic
Getting the heater up and running involves a simple operation. Follow the instructions to manually prime the unit. My unit started without this, and primed itself with no issues by itself.
Temperature Control Modes: Setting Your Ideal Temperature
The heater features two modes:
- Temperature Set Mode – Allows you to set the temperature. The unit will turn off when the desired heat is reached.
- Blower Speed Control Mode – Adjust airflow from 1 to 11, enabling selecting the blower speed of your choosing.
Features and Specifications: Understanding the Heater’s Capabilities
Temperature Range and Output: Maximum Heat and Efficiency
This heater can be adjusted to maintain between 6.4 °F-96.8 °F. With adjustable settings, users can find their perfect balance between warmth and comfort.
Fuel Consumption: Running Costs and Considerations
In my experience this unit didn’t use a lot of fuel, even at it’s maximum heating. I have used it to warm my roof top tent, as well as warm my Garage. I have a 2.5 car garage, with no insulation, and it was able to at least keep the chill away. My main goal for this unit was to be able to work in the garage without gloves, and it easily maintained a temperature that I could easily do that at.
Power Supply Options: 12vDC or 120vAC with a power supply
This unit can simply run off a battery, which makes it ideal for RV’s, car camping, overlanding, etc. I know many Power supplies, such as a Bluetti, Pecron, Ecoflow, etc all have a 10 amp cutoff for the 12vDC, so you have to make sure whatever you’re using to power the heater can handle that. I was able to use a 12ah AGM battery with a battery tender on it with no issues.
I was also able to retrofit an Xbox power supply ($15-30) to convert my garage’s 120vAC power into 12vDC, which for me was much cheaper than purchasing a dedicated power supply ($40-150).
